How to Perform a Bandwidth Connection Test
You pay a lot for your Internet access,
and you expect that access to be at its highest caliber. So
when you realize you need to download a large file or use
the Internet quickly over the course of the day, it is
important to know whether or not your Internet access is
meeting your expectations.
The speed with which you can send and receive data is known
as “Bandwidth.” Many Internet companies have claims over
their bandwidth speeds, but these speeds fluctuate so
greatly that you never truly know if you are getting the
Internet speeds that you are paying for – of even if you are
receiving anything close.
In order to find out whether or not your computer is sending
and receiving data over a long period of time, you need to
perform what is known a “bandwidth connection test” – a test
that involves sending packets of information to your
computer and seeing the speed with which it travels from one
place to another.
Bandwidth connection tests are quick and easy methods of
using the Internet to gauge your bandwidth speed. All you
need to do is go to a bandwidth connection test website and
click on “test.” That website will send you a file of
moderate size and measure the speed that it takes to
transfer that file from their server to yours.
After that simple process, the website will calculate your
bandwidth speed and provide you with a rough estimate about
how quickly the file was transferred in order to give you
the most accurate read of your Internet’s bandwidth.
There are a few thing to consider with the final result –
the first is that your bandwidth is going to vary quite a
bit based on the number of programs running, the time it has
been since you last reformatted/restarted, the number of
adware/spyware on your computer that is sending data back,
etc. Also the weather, the number of computers accessing the
Internet, whether it is wireless and even the state of your
wireless cord can all affect your bandwidth speed.
Because of this, you want to make sure that you have done
everything you can to reduce the amount of extraneous
variables before you begin, by restarting your computer,
closing all other programs, possibly even restarting the
Internet.
You may even want to wait for a moderately warm day, as well
as turn off all of the laptops available and ensure that
your computer is not attempting to access wireless networks
that you may not be interested in using.
However, once you have reduced all of these variables, a
bandwidth connection test is a quick and easy way to make
sure that your Internet is working the way you expect it to
work. You pay a great deal for your Internet access, and if
you are going to pay that much money you want to make sure
that you are getting the highest quality access in return.
Should you find that your Internet access is not meeting
your expectations, you can switch carriers with the
knowledge that you have tested your speed and deserve
something better.
